The award is made in recognition of outstanding acts of courage in a Canadian port or marine-related environment. Nominations may be made by any Corporate Member or Associate Member of the Association. More than one medal may be made in any given year. It is mandatory that the nominee be a Canadian citizen and members of the Association are also eligible for the award. It may also be awarded posthumously.
