Canada Ports Group honours marine industry giant
The Board of Directors of the Association has approved the nomination for the prestigious Medal of Merit award. This year's recipient is Laurence Pathy, Chairman of Fednav Limited, a privately owned ocean-going dry-bulk shipowning and chartering group. Its primary activities are in the transportation of bulk and breakbulk cargoes on a worldwide basis. Headquarted in Montreal, the Group has offices in London, Tokyo, Antwerp, Hamburg, Brisbane and Rio de Janeiro, as well as throughout Canada and the United States.
The award will be presented at the upcoming Annual General Meeting and Conference in Montreal, August 26-29, 2007, at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel. The Medal of Merit will be presented on Wednesday, August 29, 2007. The Medal of Merit is, "Made in recognition of outstanding works or service, preferably of national impact, by an individual, institution or organization in the port, shipping and maritime fields." Mr. Pathy clearly meets this standard given his impressive career in the marine transportation field. Laurence Pathy became President and CEO of Fednav Limited in 1972 and grew the company into one of Canada’s major maritime interests. He was also Chair of the Canadian Shipowners Association and he has made a tremendous contribution to the maritime industry in general over many years. “It is only fitting that the Association honours such a great businessman and an outstanding leader as Mr. Pathy who is also one of the greatest promoters of the maritime industry,” said Dominic J. Taddeo, President and CEO of the Montreal Port Authority and this year’s Chair of the Association.
The Medal of Merit has been awarded annually by the Association since 1975. Past recipients have included Madeleine Paquin, CEO of Logistec Corporation; the Hon. David Collenette, former Minister of Transport; Michel Pouliot, President of the Canadian Marine Pilots Association; and Jack Leitch, Chair of the Upper Lakes Group.
