Association to host governance seminar for national port system

Good governance is a critical element of good business. The Association of Canadian Port Authorities (ACPA) is hosting a Governance Seminar on November 28 and 29, 2005 at the Radisson-Admiral Harbourfront in Toronto.

This session brings together key people in Canada's port system, regulatory officials and nationally recognized experts in the field of governance.

Donna Taylor, Chair of the Association says that, “Building leadership capacity around corporate governance is widely recognized as critical to both economic and social development. Organizations serve the interests of dispersed stakeholders including investors, customers, governments, community members, employees, suppliers and citizens.” This year's Governance Seminar will address the interests of all these stakeholders and more. It will also be a time for those who have been members of boards to obtain a refresher on corporate governance and for newly minted directors to gain excellent exposure to important governance issues.

Ms. Taylor notes that, “This Seminar will focus on the unique circumstances faced by CPAs and similar organizations that must sort out pressing governance-related issues.” Governance plays a large part in responding to diverse groups and the challenge encompasses: the power given to management; control over management's use of power; management's accountability to stakeholders; formal and informal processes by which stakeholders influence management decisions; board accountability and evaluation.

This Seminar will address these concerns and will benefit all Canada Port Authorities, public and quasi-public organizations, as well as those operating in the private domain that must work with these organizations. It is a great opportunity to hear first-hand about the governance issues that have come to be a priority for both management and boards.
