Association hosts National Port Operations Seminar in Montreal

The Association of Canadian Port Authorities will host its bi-annual National Operations Seminar in Montreal on November 7 and 8, 2005, at the Hilton Bonaventure Hotel.

This session will bring together the key operating personnel in Canada’s port system from across the country. Chair of the Association of Canadian Port Authorities, Donna Taylor, says, “The Seminar will deal with critical issues of importance to all those in the port business whether they be Canada Port Authorities, local ports, private ports and terminal operators, governmental authorities, and others doing business in the port sector.”

Some of the issues covered in this year’s Seminar include port security and related funding issues; security policy and regulatory development; risk assessment; critical infrastructure protection; place of refuge; environmental initiatives; dealing with the media in times of crisis; supply chain challenges; and general port practices and procedures. Those who want to engage in discussion of the issues of importance to ongoing port operations are encouraged to attend this Seminar. The business of ports has been growing significantly in recent years and so has the many issues being dealt with by port operators everywhere. It is incumbent upon port operators to take the lead in reviewing best practices and assessing what can be done to make the business of ports even stronger.

“We are hopeful that all in the port community, whether members or not, will take advantage of this opportunity to come together and take stock of the critical operational issues before all Canadian ports, both large and small,’ commented Chair, Donna Taylor. The National Operations Seminar is a ‘sleeves rolled up’ event that adopts a workshop approach to the issues. The objective of the Seminar is to have specific outcomes that will aid both the port sector and governments address the key port-related issues of the day.
